Sunday 1 August 2021 will remain forever in the history of Italian sport: Marcell Jacobs is the new Olympic king of the queen race par excellence, the 100 meters, while Gianmarco Tamberi wins the gold medal in the high jump.
It would not be necessary to add more to understand the historical significance of these results, and not only because the Italy of athletics returns to the top step of the podium after thirteen years (Alex Schwazer, 2008). The way they came together, the two statements are unprecedented and therefore even more sensational.
The first to graduate Olympic champion is Gianmarco Tamberi, who five years after that Rio 2016 in which he could only participate as a spectator, manages to do the race of his life making no mistakes up to 2.37 and winning ex aequo with the Qatari Mutaz Essa Barshim. The images of the joy, of the screams, of the cries of Gimbo and of all his staff are something touching, something that tightens the heart and for which we only have to thank the protagonist for having given them to us.
Such a moving success, overwhelming what Marcel Lamont Jacobs did in the queen race of the Games, those 100 meters won five years ago by a certain Usain Bolt. Our big boy from Desenzano succeeds in the roll of honor the greatest sprinter ever, improving from the heats to the end and closing with an overwhelming 9.80 which is worth the new European record.
It was said that this Olympics was bewitched by the Azzurri, many times on the podium but almost never winning, especially in disciplines (fencing and shooting) in which in the past we had often made havoc.
This day erases everything and repays any disappointment. Having at home the fastest in the world and the one who jumps highest in the world is unparalleled and even those who are not passionate about sports cannot remain impassive in the face of so many emotions.
