While it is true that in most European countries, the United States, Australia and Japan, the celebration falls in May, in others, such as San Marino and the Balkan states, it is celebrated in March.
When is Mother's Day, then? The date in Italy is fixed in the second Sunday of May. The decision to set the holiday on a public holiday was taken in our country in 2000, to allow mothers to have a day off to spend with their family and children. So, following the calendar, in 2020 we celebrate May 10th; in 2021 on the 9th; in 2022 on May 8; while, in 2023 on the 14th and so on.

The first time in the world that thought of establishing a day dedicated to mothers was started was in 1870. The American activist Julia Ward Howe, in fact, he proposed to celebrate the Mother's Day for Peace (Mother's Day for Peace), a pause for reflection on the tragedies of the war. But the initiative did not take hold.
The story in Italy is different. The first time mothers were officially celebrated was in National Day of Mother and Child, December 24, 1933. On this occasion the fascist government wanted to pay homage to the most prolific women. The event was not repeated in subsequent years.
The origin of the modern Mother's Day in Italy instead it must be traced back to mid XNUMXs, when the mayor of Bordighera, Raul Zaccari, invented the anniversary and promoted it in his city. Two years later he presented a bill to the Senate of the republic to establish it as a national holiday. The proposal was accepted and Mother's Day became official.
