The State Mint pays homage to Ennio Morricone

The coin was issued by the Ministry of Economy and Finance and belongs to the Numismatic Collection 2021. On the obverse there is a portrait of Morricone. The inscription "Italian Republic" is engraved on the circle, and in the exergue, the name of the author of the coin "Cassol", which stands for Maria Angela Cassol. On the reverse are depicted the hands of the Master in the act of directing. In the circle, the writing with his name at the top, the value "5 euro" and in the right field, "R", identifying the Mint of Rome, and the year of issue 2021.

The coin, from nominal value of 5 euros, is part of the “Great Italian Artists” series. The issue was made in two versions: 5 euro Brilliant Uncirculated in silver with a circulation of 8 thousand pieces and 5 euro bimetallic with a circulation of 10 thousand pieces. The subject of this coin, like the others in the Numismatic Collection 2021, was also chosen by a commission made up of representatives of the ministry, the Mint and masters of art.

Space for them and our memories

The sweet Duty of Remembrance. Space for them. Space for their names, their art, the emotions they have produced and that we have all experienced. Space for their genius, their humanity, their extraordinary, unique simplicity. Remembering Andrea Camilleri, Ennio Morricone and Gigi Proietti is remembering a part of us, of our history, of our life. With them we laughed, reflected, we were moved, never normal emotions because they were not transmitted by normal artists. The art they embraced, they molded it like clay in their hands and it became a unique work, with a brand, with a face, with a soul that made it unmistakable. We were just lucky to know it, to enjoy it, all of it. Until the end.

The sweet Duty of Remembrance in the name of those who, one after the other, in a moment, have left us. Andrea Camilleri passed away on 17 July 2019, Ennio Morricone on 6 July 2020 and Gigi Proietti on 2 November 2020. We lost them knowing that we would never really lose them. THE Novels by Andrea Camilleri, the Music by Ennio Morricone and the Theater by Gigi Proietti are there, on the shelves of our bookcases, in the form of books, CDs or DVDs, in our minds, in our hearts. They are there to remind us that, at any time, we can reread them, listen to them again or see them again. They are there to remind us that whenever we want it, they will be ready to give us old and new emotions, which will be the same as in the past or will change as we will change over the years. They, the works, will never cease to emit that light that is inherent in them and we will never stop letting ourselves be illuminated by that dazzling light.

The sweet Duty of Remembrance, our way of thanking everyone

Thanks to the Italian Post Office and the State Mint. Thank you because in this wonderful, forgetful country we forget to remember. We forget to remember people who have enriched our life with their work, with their example, at times sacrificing theirs, of life. We forget to thank those who work every day to make us live in peace and safety. Every now and then we wake up from Italian torpor and begin to call that professional category heroes now this hour. Then we put everything on the back burner and resume our healthy habits, obviously devoid of the memory factor.

Initiatives such as those of the Italian Post Office and the State Mint offer us tangible material to strengthen our weak memory. "Italian excellences" are not just a heritage of all of us. They are like our infinite works of art, our beautiful seas or our unsurpassed mountains. They are a heritage of humanity that we must protect through remembrance. Then we will have done our task to the fullest, preparing the way for the new generations who will know what we have known, will love what we have loved and will make known what we, before them, have made known. An incredible circle of life that unites past, present and future.
