I am not a great lover of copy-paste but when the sources are authoritative and well-prepared in addition to being reliable and deserving, social networks are transformed into containers of analysis and insights.

Specifically, I have debated a lot on the fundamental importance of inserting motor / physical education in primary school as a key "subject" of the person's training path, I am a convinced supporter.

At the same time, I am a detractor of projects without planning and perspective that try to cover a hole with a blanket.

I propose the analysis on the theme of Attilio Lombardozzi, former Professor at the University Institute of Motor Sciences - Rome Foro Italico, Pedagogue and Methodologist of Sport.

Simply Illuminating.

 “The edition of“ Sport di classe ”relating to the current school year was expected with some interest and, surprisingly, a new project was presented:“ Active kids school ”, proposed as an evolution of the previous one.

It should be noted immediately that if the innovations made have been considered as a contribution to the evolution and enhancement of Physical Education in primary school, we can probably expect to achieve the opposite effect because in fact discipline is exploited to finalize it towards objectives that are not its own. There are two innovative aspects that in this sense present high critical elements:

1) the choice by the schools of two sports disciplines among those of the federations that have joined the project;

2) training of tutors by federation technicians.

The analysis of these aspects deserves particular attention.

The first point comes from a this assumption is completely unfounded and rather widespread which considers Physical Education a discipline with little meaning and therefore in need of valid supports: the various sports disciplines.

Not sport, therefore, but well-defined disciplines. The clarification is not insignificant precisely because the area of ​​intervention envisaged is that of primary school, attended by children whose need is to be "trained", not trained.

In this regard, all the scientific indications concerning the school age groups indicate as a top priority a multilateral and therefore multidisciplinary activity, even considering that there are disciplines with "early performance" and disciplines with "delayed performance" which obviously deserve different treatments. The choice of two disciplines appears, at this point, not only not very rational but downright misleading.

Physical education, it has been repeated several times, by its nature it can be based on unstable cultural models. Its history in Italy has highlighted an evolution that allows it to be identified in three phases: a) physical activity with the body (military gymnastics); b) physical activity for the body (hygienic-sanitary address); c) motor activity beyond the body (humanistic orientation).

It is precisely the humanistic conception which, by proposing the close connection between the logical instance and the affective dimension of the activity, pushes the teacher to propose play and sport as "forms" of physical education and not as additional activities. In this perspective it is correct to say that sport belongs to physical education in the ways that most correspond to the logic of "sport for all" (none excluded).

From this point of view it is absolutely not necessary for others to come and propose it, in case there is a need to support it to favor its integration with the sports realities present in the social sphere that includes the school.

The other critical aspect of the project is the intervention of the federation technicians. A proposal that cannot and must not be accepted. It must be considered that the federations generally consider the possession of a middle school diploma of first degree as the minimum qualification for access to courses for coaches; nevertheless, these coaches could be employed for the training of tutors who are asked to graduate.

In truth, the project envisages, among other requisites required of technicians, "preferably the possession of a degree in motor science". It is absolutely necessary to ensure that that "preferably" is transformed into "exclusively". It will be objected that not all federations have graduate technicians, if this were the case, said federations, not considering it important to use the skills of technicians graduated in motor science, could not expect to carry out activities in schools.


Among the hardly acceptable aspects highlighted, the safe use of the term Physical Education is pleasing, which should finally lead to the cancellation of that anachronistic situation that sees the denomination of the discipline change according to the various school levels. "
