July 11, 2021: after a 53-year wait, Italy is once again European champion! The Italian national team beat Wembley and beat England 4-3 on penalties, giving themselves the joy of the trophy that got out of hand in the lost finals of 2000 and 2012.
A game that could be mocking, with that goal immediately after just a minute and a half from Shaw that could affect everything. Instead the boys rolled up their sleeves and, despite leading a suffocating but sterile ball possession, due to the impenetrable opponent's goal developed by Southgate, they managed to place the equalizer with Bonucci in the second half.
From there, there were several opportunities for overtaking, especially with inspired Chiesa and Bonucci, but no one was able to put the ball into the net. After the regular and extra time on the score of 1-1, here is the lottery of penalties. Berardi and Kane immediately score, then Pickford para Belotti.
Maguire and Bonucci score, then Rashford hits the post. Bernardeschi's goal and then super Donnarumma rejects the first penalty in Sancho. Jorginho has the ball of the Ko, but blatantly wrong. Donnarumma thinks about sending the Azzurri into ecstasy parrying Saka: Italy is European champion, it's coming Rome!
The front pages of the newspapers can only exalt the enterprise of Roberto Mancini, the true architect of this success.
“Too beautiful - Italy champion of Europe” is the title of the Gazzetta Sportiva, while the Corriere dello Sport headlines “It's ours” and Tuttosport, to paraphrase Vasco, says “It's just us”.
Even the general newspapers put the company in the foreground. Repeated several times is “We are the champions” or “We are Europe”, respectively written by Corriere della Sera and by La Stampa and Il Messaggero. La Repubblica writes "Europe is ours", while Il Fatto Quotidiano speaks of "Blue Brexit". More sarcastic Il Giornale, which comes out with "Italy enjoys".
Foreign sports newspapers also praise the company. The Spaniard As writes “Bravissima”, with the image of Bonucci raising the cup, while the French L'Equipe headlines “Invincibles”, referring to the incredible streak of successes and unbeatenness of Mancini's national team. Finally, the British Daily Mail headlines "It all ends in tears".
