He just turned 75 David Gilmour and perhaps the millions of fans of the Pink Floyd, scattered around the four corners of the world, waited on their side indimenticabile guitarist, a birthday present indimenticabile…for them. In the past months, in fact, voices, more or less uncontrolled, spoke of meetings between the three former surviving members of the English group where, in addition to David Gilmour himself, were present Roger Waters e Nick Mason. The fourth, historical member and co - founder of the group, the keyboard player Richard Wright, passed away in 2008.

These meetings had as their object the attempt to reconstitute training and restart with new artistic projects, It would have been the Reunion of the century. It is said that there were two out of three parties who believed this new departure was possible and were represented by Waters and Mason. Gilmour himself was the one who considered that marvelous adventure definitively closed. His words, spoken a few days ago, confirm his line of thinking and have the flavor of a sentence. Definitive.

Pink Floyd, the end.

In an interview a Guitar player, a popular American magazine that winks at the greatest virtuosos of the guitar, the British musician definitively closes the door to a possible reconstitution of Pink Floyd: "Enough, I'm done with the band. Doing it without Richard would be wrong. And I agree with Roger Waters that he does what he likes and has fun with all these shows on “The Wall”. I am at peace with all of this. And I definitely don't want to go back and play stadiums. I am free to do exactly what I want and how I want".

Pink Floyd

Roger Waters had decided that 40 years ago

Gilmour's reference to Roger Waters is anything but coincidental. Waters took his farewell step forty years ago, with the release of the album "The Final Cut”, Year 1983. Then it was he who demanded that the other three members also declare the Pink Floyd story closed. But that time David Gilmour, Richard Wright and Nick Mason said no and continued the story of the legendary English group for another decade, still giving unforgettable live emotions, such as the concert in the lagoon of Venice of 15 July 1989.

Sad but right decision

The words of David Gilmour put the final word to one of the most extraordinary bands in the history of music. It can be defined as a decision painful, because it takes away any hope of seeing them together again; however, it can also be defined right, because it comes when you are fully aware that what has been can no longer return. The Pink Floyd were such a great, innovative phenomenon that is no longer repeatable. There is no longer a silent but extraordinary musician in the artistic balance of the group, Richard Wright, and there can no longer be that creative and innovative spirit, that genius in the compositions that made the group unique.

Time passes. Inexorable. For everyone. You must always be able to recognize the moment when you have to say "enough”, Even if it costs effort. For all artists it is the most difficult moment, because, more often than not, it coincides with the advancement of age and the recognition that one can no longer give, artistically, what has been given in so many years, is really hard. We diehard and ageless Pink Floyd fans have to thank David Gilmour for his decision. Him, Roger Waters, Richard Wright and Nick Mason, without forgetting the brilliant madness of another co - founder of the group, who passed away in 2006, that is Syd Barrett *,  the history of music has been written in huge letters. It's up to us to wonderful task to continue to pass it on to our children and grandchildren who, in turn, will pass it on to their children and grandchildren. Because Pink Floyd's work is like a masterpiece of art or literature: City, unique e unrepeatable.

P.S.

* To their missing friend Syd Barrett Pink Floyd dedicated one of the most beautiful songs in the history of Rock: “Wish You Were Here”.
