Attention toavocado which comes from Morocco: contains Chlorpyrifos, a plant protection substance banned in Europe because it is considered dangerous to human health. The alarm was raised by the Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed (RASFF).

The European Rapid Alert System has reported that organic avocados originating from Morocco with high residues of Chlorpyrifos, a pesticide used to kill worms and insects, have arrived in the Netherlands. According to the safety notice, a sample of the fruit had a quantity of Chlorpyrifos equal to 0,29 milligrams / kg, when the maximum residue limit (MRL) is set at 0,01 mg / kg. The avocados involved were destined for the markets of Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, Germany and Austria.

The alert had practically gone unnoticed but the Valencian Farmers' Association (AVA-ASAJA) placed the emphasis on the risks of organic foods treated with banned substances and imported from abroad. The latter fears the spread of these products, but not only. The main fear is that, passed off as organic, they have entered the European continent. The Dutch authorities themselves identified the contaminated batch of avocado and communicated it to Rasff.

The Valencian Farmers' Association, led by Cristóbal Aguado, presented an official notification to the Moroccan Confederation of Agriculture and Rural Development (Comader) which, however, defended itself, defining

the accusations of AVA-ASAJA are false and defamatory.

Aguado explains that

he does not understand the position of this Moroccan entity. If there has been a violation, we must acknowledge it and make a strong attempt to prevent it from happening again. But denying the reality, when there are official European documents to prove it, is absurd and irresponsible. It could have been the result of a mistake by a marketing company in Morocco to send avocados with residues of a prohibited substance, in this case chlorpyrifos, but it is particularly scandalous that such a detection occurred in a product sold as organic.

Foods that would have ended up on our tables, which we would have considered safe but which were not at all.
